1) The Gospel & Epistles of John
The late F. F. Bruce (who was the Rylands Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis at the University of Manchester in England) presents two volumes in one in The Gospel & Epistles of John for Eerdmans Pub. Co. Bruce’s writing is understandable and clear and his theological stance very sound. A top commentary on John.
2) The Epistles of John (The New International Commentary on the New Testament)
The New International Commentary on the New Testament provides an exposition of Scripture that is thorough and abreast of modern scholarship, yet loyal to Scripture as the Word of God. It is an authoritative guide to the text of Scripture, bridging the cultural gap between today’s world and the world of the Bible. Contributors are gifted writers and scholars who open each commentary with an introduction to the biblical book. Other features are: a select bibliography, the author’s own translation from the original Hebrew and Greek texts, verse-by-verse comments, in-depth discussions of technical matters and more. I. Howard Marshall writes the volume on John.
3) 1, 2, 3 John (Focus on the Bible)
The 41 volume Focus on the Bible Commentaries are written by top evangelical scholars and pastors. They are designed to be readable for ordinary Christians, reliable for in-depth study of the Bible, and relevant for daily Christian life. For each section of the Bible, these accessible commentaries summarize the passage of Scripture (including the intentions of the authors), the historical and cultural environment, and the questions and issues raised by a particular passage. Michael Eaton writes the volume on John.
4) The Message of John’s Letters (Bible Speaks Today)
The Message of John’s Letters is part of the Bible Speaks Today commentary series which embraces a three-prong approach to commentaries: expound the biblical text with accuracy, relate it to contemporary life and to readable. Each contributor in this series is both a noted scholar and a working pastor. Immorality is inudating the Christian community and gradually eroding the foundations of Christian living. David Jackman writes a timely and timeless commentary on John.
