Church History in Plain Language: Fourth Edition is a classic, one-volume history of the church for Christians in the twenty-first century. Written by Dr. Bruce Shelley – who was Senior Professor of Church History and Historical Theology at Denver Theological Seminary – this concise book provides an easy-to-read guide to church history with intellectual substance that makes it a standard. Readers will delight in learning church history in a plain and understandable way.
2) Turning Points: Decisive Moments in the History of Christianity
Mark Noll (the Francis A. McAnaney Professor of History at the University of Notre Dame) focuses on key events that provide a framework for understanding the history of Christianity in Turning Points: Decisive Moments in the History of Christianity. Noll does an excellent job showing Christianity as a worldwide phenomenon rather than just a Western experience.
3) Christian History Made Easy (Rose Bible Basics)
Dr. Timothy Paul Jones – professor in the School of Leadership and Church Ministry at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Christian – pens Christian History Made Easy for Rose Bible Basics. This award winning book summarizes the most important events in the history of the church in a fun way. A very good introductory book on Christian history that packs a lot of information on 2000+ years of history in 12 chapters.

4) Church History 101: The Highlights of Twenty Centuries
Authors Sinclair B. Ferguson, Joel R. Beeke and Michael A. G. Haykin – three prolific church historians – unite to offer a quick read of church history’s high points in Church History 101: The Highlights of Twenty Centuries. This is a great introduction to church history which will pique your interest in particular centuries to study more in depth. Easily readable.

Everett Ferguson’s contextual view of how the Christian church spread and developed. Volume One explores the development of the church from the days of Jesus to the years prior to the Reformation. Every topic has pictures and images relevant to it, which enhance the reading/studying experience. Although a potentially challenging read for the casual reader, students and theologians will most likely find it very useful.
